HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

A jumper from Whiting and a put back by Bimpa gave the Saints a 4-2 lead a few minutes into the first, but the Royals kept pace as things were tied at 8-all at the media timeout. McCray and Morrow then both buried triples on back-to-back possessions for the Blue and Gold, making it 14-10 with 2:56 remaining.

Queens scored the final three points of the frame, closing the gap to 14-13 with a bucket at the buzzer. Despite holding the Royals to a 4-of-15 clip over the first 10 minutes, the Saints went just 6-of-20 (30%) from the field in the opening quarter while shooting 2-of-12 (16.7%) from three-point range.

Second Quarter

Bimpa scored four straight for Limestone to start the second, knocking down two free ones before scoring on a fast break, and then McCray capped a 7-0 run with a layup to make it 21-13 with 8:20 left.  Queens would respond with a 10-4 stretch, however, to make it a one-possession game a few moments later.

Holding onto a 25-23 lead with 4:06 left in the half, four more points by Bimpa and long range strikes from Morrow and McCray powered a 12-2 spurt that would open up a 12-point lead just 90 ticks later. Queens added a pair of buckets down the stretch, but Bimpa would give Limestone a 39-29 edge at the break.

Third Quarter

The Royals kept things close with a couple of inside scores early in the third, but a triple by Byrd on the other end would give the Blue and Gold a 46-35 advantage midway through the period. Queens countered with a 6-2 mini-run over the next minute though to cut the lead to 48-41 with 3:28 left.

Sophomore Alaan West (Harvey, La.) drilled a three-pointer before McCray scored on a driving layup, putting the Saints back in front, 53-43, but the Royals would tally the final eight points of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter

Clinging to a two-point lead to start the final period, Bimpa found West streaking to the rim to give Limestone a 55-51 cushion before she grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up for her 20th point. Both teams exchanged free throws before McCray dialed long distance to make it 62-53 with 5:27 left.

Byrd scored on the inside off a nice assist from McCray before the latter buried a corner three to put the Saints in front, 67-56, just over a minute later. That would prove to be the different maker as Queens closed to within four with less than a minute left, but Limestone eked out the narrow 67-63 decision.

TURNING POINT

The Saints were able to open up a double-digit lead in the second quarter behind runs of 7-0 and 12-2, and would keep pushing the lead back to 10 points or more in the third to counter any runs by Queens. Limestone grabbed its final double-digit lead with 4:18 remaining and made that stick down the stretch.

NOTABLES

  • Limestone went scoreless over the final 4:18 of fourth quarter, but narrowly hung on for the win
  • The Royals went 18-of-25 from the free throw line while the Saints were only 7-of-10
  • The Saints turned the ball over 25 times, giving Queens a 28-9 margin in points off turnovers
  • The Blue and Gold did outpace the Royals 21-4 in second chance point, however
  • Although some of the program records are incomplete, it is believed that Bimpa is the first player in program history to score 20 points and finish with at least 20 rebounds
