Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against Mars Hill

 

Mars Hill, N.C. - Coker University baseball dropped its conference doubleheader on the road against Mars Hill University by finals of 6-5 and 8-5 on Sunday (Mar. 14). 

 

Game One:

 

Coker would strike first in the first when Phil Griffor's RBI single through the left slide would plate Cam Murray who had reached earlier by way of a walk to put the Cobras up 1-0.

 

Mars Hill would quickly come back and tie it up in the bottom of the first. 

 

Neither team would score again until the fourth. 

 

In the fourth, Murray's RBI single through the left side would plate Lake Lybrand, who reached earlier from a Mars Hill throwing error.

 

 Mars Hill would tie it right back up in the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to make it 2-2. 

 

The Lions would take the lead in the fifth when they would plate two runs. 

 

In the sixth, Murray's RBI single to second base would score Evan Pawlowski, who reached on a single to right-center to bring Coker within one at 4-3. 

 

Coker would regain the lead when Bryan Castillo would send a two-run dinger over the right-field wall, bringing home Cory Listing who had reached from his single through the right side to make it 5-4.

 

In the bottom of the seventh, Mars Hill would make a comeback off three consecutive triples to win game one 6-5. 

 

Game Two

 

Mars Hill would get on the board right away in the first with a solo home run. 

 

Coker would score three in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Griffor's RBI double to left-center would score Murray, who reached by way of a walk to tie it up at 1-1. Kody Hanna would score Griffor with his RBI single up the middle to take the 2-1 lead before Coker would extend their lead from a Castillo RBI single to right that plated Hanna. 

 

Mars Hill would tie it right back in the bottom of the fourth when they would plate two runs to make it 3-3. The Lions would take the lead in the fifth from a two-RBI double to make it 5-3. 

 

Coker would bring it within one in the sixth from Castillo's RBI ground out to third to score Hanna. 

 

In the eighth, Coker would tie up the game at 5-5 when Castillo would single to short, scoring Griffor after he reached by way of a walk. 

 

Mars Hill would plate three runs in the eighth from a two-RBI triple and an error to win game two 8-5. 

 

Offensively, Castillo and Murray performed exceptionally. Castillo went 4-8 on the day with four RBI and a home run. Murray went 3-5 with two RBI, two stolen bases and three walks. 


The Cobras are back in action this weekend (Mar. 20-21) when they host conference foe, Wingate, in a weekend four-game series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. Saturday (Mar. 20), with live coverage at www.cokercobras.com
