Baseball Beats Coker 7-5
The Lions defeated Coker 7-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Lions defeated Coker 7-5 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Henderson Field. Mars Hill improved to 9-20-1 overall and 4-12 in the league. The Cobras fell to 11-18 on the season, 1-15 in the SAC.
Daniel Vitello went 1-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI. Brett Brubaker and Shomarii Thomas recorded two RBI apiece. Brubaker added a homerun while Thomas hit a double. Matt Honeycutt went 2-for-3 on the day. Alec Bivins obtained the win (2-2) pitching five innings scattering eight hits allowing just one earned run. He struck out four batters. Troy Hall finished the game for the Lions allowing one run on three hits and also struck out four.
Bryson Conner led the Cobras going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Michael DeVecchio took the loss (3-5) on the mound for Coker.
Coker put the first run on the board in the top of the first inning when Reilly Hall scored on a Lion error. Brubaker gave the Lions the lead in the bottom half of the first inning hitting a two-run homerun to right field.
Mars Hill scored five runs on three hits and one Cobra error to take a 7-1 after their third at-bat. Thomas hit a two-run double in the inning before Daniel Vitello accounted for the remainder of the runs hitting a three-run homerun to left field.
Coker trimmed the Lions' lead to 7-4 in the top half of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits and one Lion error. Larry McCabe hit a solo homerun and then Bryson Conner doubled down the left field line to drive in the other two runs.
Brooks Estrada hit a solo homerun in the seventh inning to end the scoring in the game and make the final tally 7-5 in favor of the Lions. Troy Hall held the Cobras at bay the rest of the way to pick up his first save of the year.
The teams will conclude the three game series tomorrow with a double-header beginning at noon.
