Strong First Half Lifts Trojans Over Newberry; 70-55

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University women's basketball used a hot shooting first half and a career high night from senior Heather Jankowy to defeat South Atlantic Conference foe Newberry; 70-55 Saturday night at the Abney Center.

With the victory, Anderson moves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference while the loss drops Newberry to 6-2 on the year and 2-2 in the SAC.

The Trojans were led by Jankowy's career high 24 points on 8-of-13 from the floor while hitting a career high 3-pointers for a game with six. Freshman Maddison Baggett dropped in 14 points while grabbing five rebounds. Senior Jasmine Franklin totaled eight points and eight rebounds while senior Bailey Sims contributed seven points and four rebounds. Sophomore Erika Martin played a solid 18 minutes netting five points and ripping down seven rebounds for the Black and Gold.

The Wolves had three players reach double figures with sophomore Meg Essex recording a team-high 13 points. Junior Nicola Handreck netted 11 points and three steals while junior Samara Hill chipped in 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds for Newberry.

Head Coach Jonathon Barbaree's Thoughts: "Very happy about getting the win tonight and how well we defended a team that has the capability to score a lot of points. It feels great to start 3-0 in the conference, but we have to be able to put together two quality halves."

-The Black and Gold outrebounded the Wolves 45-41.
-Since joining the SAC, the Trojans hold a 10-5 overall advantage over Newberry with 8 of the 10 wins coming at the Abney Center.
- Anderson shot a staggering 68.8 % (11-16) from the floor and 62.5% (5-8) from behind the arc during the first period of play.
- The Trojans eclipsed their previous most points in a quarter (25) by scoring 27 points in the opening period.
-Franklin's three offensive boards moves the senior in sole possession of sixth place for most offensive rebounds (244) in program history.
-Jankowy moved into the seventh spot for Anderson's most career 3-pointers made (158) and moved into sole possession of eighth place in career assists (245).
