
Mars Hill falls to UVA Wise in penultimate series
The Mars Hill softball team (15-29, 4-18 SAC) was swept by UVA Wise (16-30, 6-18 SAC) by scores of 6-5 and 9-5 Saturday afternoon on the road.

WISE, Va. - The Mars Hill softball team (15-29, 4-18 SAC) was swept by UVA Wise (16-30, 6-18 SAC) by scores of 6-5 and 9-5 Saturday afternoon on the road.
GAME ONE: UVAW 6, MHU 5 - 8 Innings
The Cavaliers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to walk game one off.
A two-run single off the bat of Kara Long tied the game at five. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Savannah Johnson drew a walk, plating Long for the game-winning run.
After three scoreless innings, Farley Park opened the scoring with a single to right center in the top of the fourth, plating Leah Grimes. Grimes, in the top of the fifth, scored two with a single up the middle, extending the Lions' lead to three.
The Cavaliers responded with a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by Mallory McKnight's two-run double.
In the top of the extra frame, Park recorded her third RBI of the day with a two-run home run down the left field line.
Park led all players with three RBI and led the Lions with two hits.
GAME TWO: UVAW 9, MHU 5
Back-to-back four-run innings for UVA Wise helped the Cavaliers complete the Saturday sweep.
UVA Wise ended the second up 4-0, highlighted by Brie Frazier's two-run single to center. In the top of the third, Mars Hill cut into the deficit, plating two runs. Leah Grimes scored Katie Todd with a RBI double while Miranda Marks scored off of Maia Sholter's RBI single to right field.
In the third, Adyson Gibson plated two off of a triple to right center while Frazier collected her game-high fourth RBI with a two-run home run to left field.
The Lions struck twice in the top of the sixth, but UVA Wise answered back with a solo home run off the bat of Sarah Barrett.
Farley Park capped the scoring with a RBI single through the right side of the infield, allowing Kayla Gallagher to score.
Grimes, Park, and Todd led the Lions with two hits apiece. Frazier led all players, going 4-for-4 from the plate with four RBI.
Mars Hill concludes their 2024 season on Monday, April 22 when they face Limestone at home. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Ponder Field.
