Parker's Three Scores Leads Football Past Carson-Newman

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba stayed unbeaten with a 33-27 victory over visiting Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Catawba Indians move to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Eagles drop to 0-5 and 0-3.

Daniel Parker scored the last of his three touchdowns midway through the fourth quarter to put Catawba on top for good. Down 27-26, Parker caught a 19-yard pass from Ken Avent to cap a 75-yard drive with 8:07 remaining to lift the Indians.

Catawba held Carson-Newman to 229 total yards and caused four turnovers, but the Eagles staying the game with the help of two kickoff returns for touchdowns and a blocked punt for a score. DeQuan Dudley had two 100-yard kickoff returns for the Eagles and Elijah Davis fell on a blocked punt in the end zoen with 6:27 left in the third quarter that had Carson-Newman up 21-20.

Early in the fourth quarter, Avent scored on a 10-yard run to put Catawba back on top. Carson-Newman answered on a Lamarcus Brown four-yard run. That score was set up by a 35 yard pass from Brown to Tydricus Hellams.

Catawba answered that score with the winning drive. The Eagles had one final chance with two minutes to play, but Brown was intercepted by Jordan Gregg. With a minute to go, the Eagles roughed Catawba punter Clayton Crile that gave the Indians a first down and a chance to run out the clock.

Parker ran for 127 yards and two scores for the Indians. He added three catches for 42 yards and that winning touchdown reception. Jyrea Martin added another 94 yards on the ground. Avent went 15-of-28 through the air for 161 yards. Brandon Thomas was the top target with four catches for 58 yards.

Troy Dendy rushed for 84 yards for the Eagles. Brown completed 6-of-17 passes for 103 yards. Hellams had two receptions for 72 yards. Dudley amassed 229 yards on three kickoff returns and added 62 yards on four punt returns.

Catawba travels to Newberry next Saturday with a kickoff with the Wolves scheduled for 5 p.m.
