
Ross' late goal earns MHU road win in season opener

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's soccer team (1-0) opened their 2023 campaign with a 1-0 win over Lees-McRae (0-1) Thursday night on the road.
The Lions outshot Lees-McRae 4-3 in the first half. Neither team was able to break the scoreless tie.
Despite being outshot 4-3 in the second half, Mars Hill scored the lone marker. In the 73rd minute, Marianne Ross broke the deadlock with her first goal of the season.
Ross led the Lions with two shots on goal while Riley Nash added two shots. Julia Luna, Samantha Swinson, and Alyssa Kuhl each added one shot attempt.
Camryn Miller made three saves for the shutout victory.
Mars Hill opens their home slate on Wednesday, September 6 when they host Converse inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium. Kickoff is set for a 5 p.m. start.
