
Mars Hill defeats Catawba in tightly contested four-setter
The Mars Hill volleyball team (14-2, 9-2 SAC) defeated Catawba (3-12, 1-7 SAC) by a score of 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 26-24) Friday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (14-2, 9-2 SAC) defeated Catawba (3-12, 1-7 SAC) by a score of 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 26-24) Friday night inside Chambers Gymnasium.
Mars Hill roared out to a 9-1 lead in the first set, but the Indians rallied midway through the frame. Trailing 16-8, the Indians went on a 13-4 run to lead 21-20 late in the frame. An Addison Easter ace to pull within one, 24-23, was the catalyst for a Lions' comeback to take the first set.
The Indians led for a majority of the second set, hitting a game-high .255 in the frame. Mars Hill was able to tie the contest at 22, but were unable to complete the comeback bid as the Indians tied the contest at one set apiece.
The Lions hit a team-high .239 in the third set, leading to a 25-17 set win. Jana Cuk knocked down six kills in the frame followed by five from Jada Cannon.
The fourth set, a back-and-forth affair saw 12 ties in the frame. Mars Hill, fending off set point, was able to go on a 3-0 run to close out the match. Sarah Goddard recorded six kills in the set.
Cuk led all players with 16 kills followed by Goddard's 14 on the night. Emma Vacha led the Lions with five block assists while Laela Jimenez led the team with 23 digs. Jordan Schmucker posted a game-high 46 assists.
Mars Hill hosts Anderson on Tuesday, October 11 inside Chambers Gymnasium with a 6 p.m. first serve.
