
Thompson plays OT hero as Lions defeat Newberry
The Mars Hill football team (3-2, 2-1 SAC) defeated Newberry (3-2, 2-1 SAC) by a score of 28-22 in overtime Saturday afternoon inside Meares Stadium.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (3-2, 2-1 SAC) defeated Newberry (3-2, 2-1 SAC) by a score of 28-22 in overtime Saturday afternoon inside Meares Stadium.
Newberry, after recovering a Lions' fumble late in the fourth quarter, tied the game at 22 with under 10 seconds to play. After a scoreless first overtime frame, the Lions' Nick Jackson stopped Newberry's second drive with an interception. Following a penalty that pushed the Lions' back to their own 30 yard line, Jimmy Urzua found CJ Thompson in the back of the endzone for the game-winning score.
The Wolves racked up 22 first downs and 433 yards of offense to the Lions' 19 first downs and 410 yards. The Lions forced three turnovers and two sacks while controlling the ball for 32:44.
