
Lions open season with 3-0 win over Bluefield State

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (1-0) swept (25-20, 25-15, 25-15) Bluefield State (1-1) Friday afternoon on day one of the second annual Tony Fontanelle Memorial Volleyball Tournament.
Mars Hill recorded a match-high 15 kills in the first set with Nikkayla Stewart recording five in the frame. Ioana Poenaru and Jada Cannon each added three apiece. Poenaru led all players with seven digs in the set.
The Lions' offense continued to roll, hitting .280 in the second set with Timmons Yates leading the team with four kills. Jannice Lynch led all players with six kills in the stanza. Kaitlyn Johnson led the Lions with three digs.
Mars Hill hit a match-high .333 in the third set en route to their first win of the season. Cannon led all players with five kills followed by Skylar Ogden's four in her collegiate debut. Laela Jimenez led all players with eight digs.
Cannon led all players with 10 kills, adding four aces and three digs. Yates ended the contest with seven kills while the duo of Stewart and Poenaru each added six apiece. Grant led the Lions with two blocks (1 BS, 1 BA) while Jimenez led the team with 13 digs. Jordan Schmucker recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 11 digs.
Mars Hill hosts Shorter at 12:15 p.m. and King at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 2 on the final day of the Tony Fontanelle Memorial Volleyball Tournament.
