Volleyball Splits on Day Two in Indy

The Warriors won in five sets over McKendree to finish the weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (3-1) finished play at the season-opening UIndy Invitational with a Saturday split.  WSU lost in three sets to Anderson (2-1) before ending the weekend with an exciting five-set victory over McKendree (2-2).

MATCH ONE vs. ANDERSON (L, 0-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans led 4-2 to start the first set and eventually 7-3.  A 4-0 run by the Warriors powered by two kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and another point by Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) tied the set at 7-7.  The Green & Gold took advantage of three straight AU attacking errors to go in front 13-10.  Wayne State led 16-13 and 19-18 following a spike by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern).  Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) tied the game at 21-21 with a kill but Anderson would win four of the last five points to take the opening point 25-22.

Wayne State trailed 8-3 early in the second set and eventually 13-6.  The Trojans controlled the rest of the set and won 25-13.

Anderson led the third set 8-5 but WSU used a 4-0 rally to take a 9-8 lead.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Shell ended that run with a block.  The Trojans came back and led 17-11 and 23-16.  WSU  would storm back to tie the game at 24-24.  VanderWal led the comeback a pair of kills, while Duffield collected an ace.  However, AU would complete the sweep by winning the final two points.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal finished with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Duffield had 28 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) tallied 26 digs.

ONE BIG THING
Wayne State hit just .056 against the Trojans and made four reception errors.

MATCH TWO vs. McKENDREE (W, 3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Bearcats opened the match by leading 4-1 in the first set.  The McKendree advantage grew to 12-6 before a point from Ella Uganski (Jenison, Mich.) brought WSU within four, 16-12.  Trailing, 21-14, the Warriors went on a 4-0 run to make it 21-18.  Shell highlighted the rally with back-to-back kills.  However, Wayne State would be unable to complete the comeback, falling 25-20.

The second set was tied at 7-7.  Three consecutive errors by the Bearcats plus a block by Uganski and VanderWal gave the Green & Gold an 11-8 lead.  WSU led 14-11 before McKendree evened the game at 15-15.  An ace by Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) put WSU on top 18-16.  The margin was five, 22-17, after four straight points by Wayne State.  The Bearcats would come back and take a 24-23 lead with a 4-0 rally of its own.  A kill by Duffield combined with two blocks gave the Warriors a 26-24 victory.

WSU started fast in the third set, leading 6-1, following back-to-back service aces by Benoit.  A spike by VanderWal kept the Warriors in front, 12-9.  McKendree tied the set at 14-14 and then led 17-14 after a 7-1 rally.  McKendree would control the rest of thee set and win 25-21.

Morrison and Shell combined for a block before a kill by Shell gave WSU a 7-5 advantage early in the fourth set.  VanderWal collected consecutive points to push the lead to 9-6 but McKendree answered with four straight points to regain the lead 10-9.  The Bearcat advantage was 13-11 when three errors allowed the Warriors to go back on top, 14-13.  The Green & Gold used a kill from Shell to lead 19-16 and a point by Duffield to make it 21-17.  The two sides traded points down the stretch but WSU forced a fifth set by winning 25-22.

The tone was set early by the Green & Gold in the fifth and final set as WSU led 6-1 and 8-2 following an ace by Benoit.  A point by Morrison put Wayne State on top 10-3.  The Bearcats made it interesting, pulling within three, 12-9.  The margin was five, 14-9, after a point by Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.).  McKendree won the next two points by VanderWal finished things with her 18th kill of the match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal was effective with 18 kills on 59 swings to go with 16 digs, while Giroux posted 10 kills.  Duffield tallied a season-best 40 assists and Benoit anchored the defense with 28 digs.

"Today we faced two teams that really stressed our system in different ways," said head coach Tim Koth.  "It was nice to see that we were able to work through that in the second match.  Our experience showed in the fifth set.  Overall, it was a very nice weekend against great competition for the Warriors."

Wayne State will host the Warrior Invitational on Sept. 2-3.  The Green & Gold will face Ursuline on Friday 2:30 PM and Quincy at 7:00 PM.
