Cobras Sweep Catawba in SAC Road Doubleheader

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Coker College softball team improved to 30-10 and 6-2 in South Atlantic Conference play thanks to a pair of wins over Catawba College on Wednesday (Mar. 29) in a SAC doubleheader. The Cobras won game one by a score of 3-0 and then won game two by a score of 6-4. 

In game one, a Riley Morris two-run home run in the top of the second inning lifted the Cobras to an early 2-0 advantage. The scoreboard would remain untouched until the top of the sixth inning, when Tayler Barcomb scored on a fielder's choice by Morris to give Coker a 3-0 lead. Catawba could not claw its way back in and the Cobras would take game one 3-0.

Morris led the way, going 1-for-3 with three RBI. Kelsi Bachmann, Mindy North, Maria Williamson, Allyson High and Barcomb all recorded hits in the win.

Christine Carver picked up the win, improving to 6-3 on the season. She allowed just three hits in six shutout innings. Nikki Linthicum allowed just one walk in the seventh to pick up her second save of the season.

In game two, it was Coker striking first yet again, this time Tayler Barcomb reaching on a fielder's choice, scoring Kelsi Bachmann and giving Coker a 1-0 lead. Catawba responded with one run in the bottom of the first and two runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead after two innings. A groundout by Williamson in the third plated a run and closed the deficit to 3-2. Catawba proceeded to add another run in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. After singling and advancing to second, Morris scored on a Lilli Otten RBI single to close the deficit to 4-3. A RBI single by Morris in the top of the fifth inning tied the game up at 4-4. The Navy and Gold kept the bats rolling in the top of the sixth inning, as Bachmann slashed a double into left field, scoring Otten and Anna Gluhosky and giving Coker a 6-4 lead. Catawba could only manage one hit in the sixth an seventh innings, giving Coker the win in game two by a score of 6-4.

Morris went 3-for-4 in game two with one RBI. Williamson and Otten each recorded two hits, while Bachmann plated two RBI for the Cobras in the win.

Augusta Jackson earned her fifth win of the season. She allowed just one hit in four innings of relief. Taylor Forehand allowed no earned runs in her start, which lasted three innings.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Apr. 1) at Tusculum. Game times are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
