Catawba Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry To Sweep Series Saturday

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College Baseball Team (9-5, 3-0 SAC) took both games of a doubleheader against Emory & Henry College (4-10, 0-3 SAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Catawba Indians broke out the bats, as they won game one 13-2 and shutout the Wasps in game two by a 16-0 scoreline.

Game One – Catawba 13, Emory & Henry 2
Catawba struck first in the bottom of the second, as they posted five runs on four hits to jump out in front 5-0. The Wasps answered in the top of the fourth when junior outfielder Wayne Mize (Salisbury, N.C.) launched his first homer of the season over the wall in right center to make it 5-1. Fifth-year designated hitter Matthew Long (Willow Spring, N.C.) followed suit two batters later, as he left the yard with a solo shot to trim the deficit to 5-2.

It would be all Catawba Indians from that point forward as they responded in the bottom of the fourth with four runs of their own, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Carson Yates. Catawba added two in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth for the 13-2 final.

Joseph Webb was credited with the win for Catawba while junior pitcher Bryson Wagner (Salisbury, N.C.) took the loss for the Wasps. 

Game Two – Catawba 16, Emory & Henry 0 (seven innings)
It was more of the same in game two of the doubleheader, as Catawba jumped out front with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The home team poured it on in game two, scoring two in the home half of the third inning and posted five runs in both the fourth and fifth as they ran away from the visitors from Emory for the dominant 16-0 victory.

Mason Gwyn earned the win on the hill for Catawba as he went five innings and allowed just one hit while fanning five batters. Junior righty Andrew Parr (Opelika, Al.) was saddled with the loss for the Wasps.
