
Lions felled by No. 24 Wingate
The Mars Hill volleyball team (14-14, 11-10 SAC) was defeated in straight sets versus No. 24 ranked Wingate (27-1, 20-1 SAC) Friday evening in the penultimate match of the regular season.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (14-14, 11-10 SAC) was defeated in straight sets versus No. 24 ranked Wingate (27-1, 20-1 SAC) Friday evening in the penultimate match of the regular season.
The Bulldogs dominated the first set, hitting .500 in the first frame, knocking down 18 kills on 32 attempts. With the set tied at four, Wingate went on a 5-0 run to pull away from the Lions. Later in the frame, leading 13-8, Wingate reeled off nine of the following 10 points to hold a 22-9 lead.
Mars Hill held an 8-5 lead early in the second set before a Wingate 4-0 run provided them their first lead of the frame. The teams traded points until the contest was tied at 15 before, coming out of a Bulldog timeout, Wingate went on a 4-0 run and took seven of the following eight points to go up 22-16 late.
The third set saw the teams tied at 16 before a kill from Lynnlee Mather and ace from Molly Lambillotte gave Wingate the two-point advantage. The Bulldogs took six of eight points to go up 22-18 before closing out the contest on a Lambillotte kill.
Sophie Schaff led the Bulldogs with 11 kills while Lambillotte finished the contest with 10 kills and 16 digs for the double-double. Rachel Alles collected 20 assists and 13 digs.
Sarah Goddard led the Lions with six kills and added 11 digs. Grace Lilly added five kills followed by Lauren Phillips four. Sara Pasour led the Lions with 16 assists while Ully Martins recorded a team-high 18 digs.
Mars Hill closes out the regular season with a 5 p.m. contest versus Coker on Saturday, November 16 inside Chambers Gymnasium.
