HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

The Lions got off to a fast start in the midweek matchup, doubling to start the game before taking a 1-0 lead following a pair of walks and a hit batter. Walden hit the next batter with the bases loaded before a sacrifice fly to leftfield helped stake the visitors to a quick 3-0 advantage in the top of the first.

Limestone put a pair of runners on with nobody out in the home half before Towle laced a two-out double to the leftfield gap in the second. However, the Saints could not capitalize on either opportunity before Mars Hill busted through with five runs in the third to put the game out of reach, 8-0, in the early going.

Innings 4-6

Without the benefit of a base hit, the Lions tallied another run in the fourth as a one-out walk was followed up by a groundout and two pitches that reach the backstop, making it a nine-run affair. Allen led the bottom half off with a single, but the Saints would again leave a runner stranded in scoring position.

Towle doubled down the leftfield line to start the fifth, but the Blue and Gold came up empty as the next better struck out before a double play ended the inning. Mars Hill made it 11-0 in the sixth with a two-run bomb, but Limestone platted a pair of runs on an RBI double by Allen and a sac fly from Staab.

Innings 7-9

After Limestone walked the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, the Lions extend the lead to 13-2 with a two-run single down the rightfield chalk. The Saints would get two runs back on an RBI single by Staab in the eighth and an RBI double by Creps in the ninth, but it was not enough to overcome the large deficit.

TURNING POINT

Mars Hill took control early on, scoring three runs on just one hit in the first inning before pushing across five runs in the third to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Lions eventually extended the margin to 11-0.

NOTABLES

  • Limestone lost to Mars Hill at home for just the fourth time in the all-time series
  • The Saints still hold a 21-11 advantage against the Lions dating back to the 1993 season
  • Allen needs one RBI to tie Peter Sullivan for fourth all-time in team history with 145 career RBIs
