HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

Wingate did not need much time pulling out in front, taking a 1-0 lead just four pitches into the game on an RBI double by Zach Little. The Bulldogs added one more in the frame, making it 2-0, but Limestone appeared that it would get something rolling in the home half of the first following a double by Whetsell.

The Saints were unable to capitalize on the leadoff two-bagger as a pair of strikeouts and a popup on the infield kept the home team off the scoreboard. Limestone did get one of those runs back in the second on a solo homerun by Cornell, but Wingate put up four runs in the top of the third to extend the margin to 6-1.

Innings 4-6

Trailing 7-1 following back-to-back doubles by the visitors in the fifth, the Blue and Gold strung together four runs after loading the bags with one out in the bottom half. Creps sent a two-run single back up the middle before a fielder's choice by Allen and sac fly by Hilderbrandt cut the lead to 7-5 for the Saints.

Innings 7-9

The Bulldogs extended the margin to 9-5 behind a two-run shot by Jed Bryant in the top of the ninth, a moonshot over the leftfield wall, to put the game away. Limestone put one runner on in the bottom of the ninth on a pinch-hit single by Stavitski, but the next two batters were retired quietly to end the contest.

TURNING POINT

Wingate took control quickly, platting the go-ahead score just four pitches in, before adding four runs in the third. The Saints rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but it was not quite enough as the Bulldogs added two more markers in the ninth for the 9-5 decision.
