Newberry picks up 2-1 win over Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Jaidyn Jacobs scored twice in the first half and Newberry College made the lead stand up for a 2-1 win over Tusculum University in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

The Wolves (2-8-0, 2-4-0 SAC) earned their second straight victory and sent the Pioneers (2-9-0, 2-4-0 SAC) to their fourth straight setback despite Tusculum outshooting Newberry 15-9 for the match, including a 10-4 margin in the second half.

Brianna Garcia scored the lone goal for Tusculum in the 28th minute to level the score at 1-1 after Jacobs scored 1:11 into the first half, but Jacobs notched the go-ahead tally with 4 1/2 minutes left until halftime.

Delaney Hood finished with eight saves in goal for the Wolves, while Emma Harriman had four saves for the Pioneers. Hood made five of her eight saves in the second half.

Jacobs opened the scoring just over a minute into the first half as she collected a loose ball and fired a shot from 30 yards that beat Harriman to the far corner for her first goal of the season.

Tusculum's first shot came in the 26th minute, as Bailey Bylotas collected a cross and just missed the right post. Tusculum would even the score at 27:32 as Kenzie Ellenburg's pass from the right side went to Garcia, who split two defenders and scored just inside the far post for her third goal of the season.

Newberry went ahead 2-1 at 40:37 as a cross from Ariana Paez to the top of the box deflected off a Tusculum defender to Jacobs, who rifled a shot past Harriman for her second of the game.

In the second half, Newberry's Monica Jimenez shot just high over the crossbar in the 58th minute, while Hood made saves on Arisa Timoll in the 53rd minute and Garcia in the 58th minute. Most of Tusculum's shot attempts were from distance, although Hood was called upon to make a stop on a redirection inside the box from Garcia in the 76th minute.

Tusculum had a flurry of chances in the 81st minute, but Ellenburg headed a shot wide off a corner and then headed another corner to Hood for the save. The Pioneers' last shot of the match came in the 87th minute, which went high from the top of the box by Cristina Iranzo. Newberry was able to protect possession in the final moments, preventing the Pioneers from looking for the tie.

Tusculum had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks in the match, with all four corners coming in the second half. The Pioneers were whistled for seven fouls to three for the Wolves, while each team was flagged twice for offsides.

The Pioneers will step out of conference play to host Asbury University in a non-conference match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Pioneer Field. The Eagles, a Division III independent, are 3-7-1 following a 1-1 draw at Rio Grande on Saturday.
