JCSU Uses Late Run to Outlast Anderson, 72-69

Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 28, 2017) –
Johnson C. Smith University had four players score in double figures and used a late run to outlast visiting Anderson University in a men's basketball nonconference game on Tuesday night at Brayboy Gym.

The Golden Bulls (7-2) used a pivotal 5-0 run with less than three minutes to play to break a 65-65 tie.  Over the scoring span, JCSU got a huge three-pointer from sophomore Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and a driving layup from senior Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) to bolt to a 70-65 lead with 2:03 left to play.

Anderson (1-5) cut the lead to 70-67 after two Gage Ellis free throws with 1:49 on the clock.  Following two Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) free throws that put JCSU back on top 72-67, Anderson was fouled on a late three-point attempt.  Jeremy Bouton would hit two of the three shots to provide the 72-69 final.

As a team, JCSU shot 44.8% from the field (26-of-58) and 20% (5-of-25) from distance.  The Golden Bulls continued to be efficient from the free throw line, connecting for 15-of-19 attempts for 78.9%

Davis led the way with 19 points while Roddric Ross (Forest City, N.C.) had 13.  Minor and Kirchman each finished with 10 points with Kirchman dishing out a team-high eight assists.

Anderson was paced by Randall Shaw's 27 points.  Gage Ellis was the only other Trojan to score in double-figures, as he netted 11 in the loss.

JCSU will take a break to finish the final week of class and for final exams.  The Golden Bulls will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 14, opening CIAA play against Northern Division foe Lincoln.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
