HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

The Saints forced a turnover on Mars Hill's first possession as redshirt-senior PJ Brown (Hopkins, S.C.) picked off his 8th career pass. After moving into Lions territory, the Blue and Gold pulled ahead as a 53-yard field goal by Smith made it a 3-0 game with four minutes gone by in the first.

Limestone's defense then came up with a big stop on the ensuing possession as Patrick jumped on a loose ball at the MHU 31-yard line. The Saints capitalized six plays later as Patton broke the goal line from five yards out to make it a 10-0 game.

Mars Hill responded with an 8-play, 78-yard scoring driving, highlighted by a 44-yard catch-and-run by Craig Rucker, as the Lions trimmed the margin to 10-7 with 3:36 remaining in the quarter.

Second Quarter

The Blue and Gold extended the lead to 13-7 early in the second as Smith split the uprights from 30-yards away, but the Lions would grab its first lead of the day as Keshaun Taylor hauled in a 56-yard touchdown catch.

After forcing a three-and-out, Mars Hill capitalized on excellent field position following a 62-yard punt return as Malik Prescott punched it in from three yards out to make it 21-13 game with 11:32 remaining.

The Saints countered as Corbin capped a 54-yard scoring drive with a one-yard TD plunge on fourth down followed by a two-point conversion. After Limestone got the ball back, Corbin hit Fleming for 49 yards before finding him on a 41-yard touchdown pass to put the visitors in front, 28-21, at the half.

Third Quarter

Limestone turned the ball over on downs to start the third quarter, setting the Mars Hill offense up at its own 41-yard line. The Lions moved the ball 59 yards on 10 plays as Elijah Jett ran the ball around the right edge to tie the game at 28-all on a 13-yard touchdown.

Fourth Quarter

After Felder ended a Mars Hill drive with a sack at the end of the third, Corbin hit Fleming on a deep slant for an 84-yard catch-and-run as the Saints regained the lead, 35-28, with 14:39 left in regulation.  That lead would not hold up, however, as the Lions scored touchdowns on two straight possessions.

Trailing 42-35 with less than eight minutes left in regulation, a 40-yard kickoff return by freshman Tyrell Abney (Saluda, S.C.) set the Saints up at the MHU 48-yard line. Ten plays later, Corbin again connected with Fleming at the sticks for a three-yard touchdown as Limestone tied the game up at 42-all.

Overtime

Mars Hill went ahead 49-42 on its opening possession in overtime, but Limestone countered on one play as Corbin hit Fleming in the corner of the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown reception.

The Saints needed two plays to move ahead, 56-49, as Patton took it up the middle for a two-yard score. Following a pair of first downs, the Lions had a first-and-goal at the 3-yard line, but the Limestone defense held firm as Patrick and junior Lazarius Tinsley (Covington, Ga.) ended the game with a tackle on fourth down at the 2.

TURNING POINT

In a game that featured seven lead changes and five ties, the Limestone defense was there to prevent a third overtime with a game-winning goal-line stand.
