Pitching Near Perfect As Cobras Sweep Day Two of CSU Classic

COLUMBUS, GA. – It was the arms of the Coker softball pitching staff that shined on day two (Mar. 4) of the Columbus State Classic, allowing just one run on seven combined hits in wins over Barry University and Columbus State University. The Cobras took down Barry in game one by a score of 1-0, then captured a win over CSU by a score of 7-1. 

In game one, an RBI single by Tayler Barcomb in the fourth inning was the difference, lifting Coker to the 1-0 win. Cacey Simmons, Hannah Goodman and Kelsi Bachmann all registered hits in the win.

In the circle, Augusta Jackson (3-1) stole the show, allowing just two hits in a complete game effort.

In game two, Maria Williamson singled through the left side in the top of the first inning, giving Coker the early 1-0 lead. In the third inning, it was Williamson again slashing a single, this time plating Bachmann and putting Coker ahead 2-0. CSU responded with a run in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the lead to 2-1. In the top of the fifth inning, RBI singles by Williamson and Barcomb added two more runs for the Navy and Gold, leaving the score 4-1 in its favor. In the top of the seventh, Barcomb belted a double into right field, which scored another run, extending the lead to 5-1. Allyson High capped off the evening with a two-RBI single, scoring Barcomb and Williamson and leading Coker to the eventual 7-1 win.

Williamson led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Barcomb, High and Hannah Price all finished 2-for-4 in game two, Barcomb collecting two RBI, while High knocked in an RBI as well. Bachmann and Simmons each picked up a hit to round things out offensively for the Cobras.

Tabitha Allen moved to 5-1 on the season with the win. She allowed one run on three hits in four innings. Taylor Forehand earned her first save of the season, allowing just two hits in three innings of relief.

The Cobras will play the final game of the CSU Classic tomorrow (Mar. 5) at 12:30 as they face Barry.
