Women's Volleyball splits pair at Chowan Invitational

Murfreesboro, N.C. ---- The Catawba College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Chowan Invitational Tournament on Friday, falling to Shippensburg before sweeping host Chowan for their first victory of the season

SHIPPENSBURG 3, CATAWBA 0

TEAM STATS

- Catawba had 36 kills to Shippensburg's 33

- However, Shippensburg hit .178 to Catawba's .106

- Shippensburg notched nine service aces on the afternoon

- Catawba's 24 errors cost them, with Shippensburg only committing 15

- Shippensburg also led the way in assists, with 44 to Catawba's 34

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Jordan Danielson led the way for Catawba with 12 kills on .280 hitting percentage, followed by Kelcie Love with 10 kills on a .065 clip

- Dara Kane provided 19 assists to lead the way along with seven digs, second only to Kary Hales' 15

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

- Shippensburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Gracen Nutt scored a pair of kills and Catawba committed a couple of errors

- Catawba would bring it close, pulling to within one as Danielson and Love each notched a pair of kills to make it 6-7

- Both teams would trade points until a 7-2 Shippensburg run put the Raiders ahead 18-11

- A late 8-3 push from Catawba pulled them to a 21-24 deficit before Shippensburg closed the deal

SECOND SET

- Each team traded points throughout the set, with Love notching three kills for Catawba as the two teams battled out to an 8-8 start

- A 4-0 Raiders run courtesy of three Catawba errors made it 12-8, but a string of Shippensburg miscues let Catawba knot it back up 13-13

- Catawba would take a 22-21 lead, but three straight points for Shippensburg put them on the brink at 22-24

- A Love kill and block by the Danielsons brought Catawba back to level terms, but a pair of Gardner kills would ice the set for the Raiders

THIRD SET

- Shippensburg jumped out to a 7-2 , but Catawba would fight back led by Love to tie the set at 7-7

- Shippensburg would pull away again after the teams battled to a 13-13 line, with a 7-0 run to make it 20-14

- Shippensburg wouldn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way, outscoring Catawba 12-5 to secure the win as a pair of service aces finished the set

 

CATAWBA 3, CHOWAN 0

TEAM STATS

- Catawba led the way with 38 kills to Chowan's 24

- Catawba was dominant in hitting percentage, notching a .292 mark to Chowan's .022

- Catawba led the way as well in assists, 37 to 23, and digs, 45 to 35

- Chowan's 22 attack errors were a big factor, as Catawba would finish with just 12

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Danielson made it two straight games leading Catawba in kills, as she tied Mailie Chretien with nine apiece. Katrina Misra chipped in with eight

- Dara Kane served up 23 assists, good for over half of Catawba's total. Siena Roethler was second with nine

- Riley Hill led the way defensively with 16 digs, while Kane made her presence felt with eight of her own

- Natalie Rehm had 2.5 of Catawba's 5 blocks on the night

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST SET

- It was a back and forth affair early, with Chretien's five kills keeping Catawba right with Chowan at 9-9

- No team would lead by more than two until a 4-0 run, including two kills from Misra, put Catawba up 16-11

- The Hawks would try to battle back, but could never pull closer than four points as Catawba held firm to close out on a 6-3 run to take the first set

SECOND SET

- Catawba set the tone early with a 5-1 run out of the gates, including three straight kills from Danielson

- Chowan wouldn't go away, clawing back with the help of several Catawba errors to knot the game up at 8-8

- Catawba, however, wouldn't flinch, ripping off a 6-1 run thanks to three blocks to make it 14-9

- Similar to the first set, Chowan wouldn't be able to close to within more than four points the rest of the way, with Catawba pulling away to take a two set lead with an 8-3 run

THIRD SET

- Catawba carried their form from the end of the second set into the third, racing out to a 7-3 lead as Misra and Chretien each scored a pair of kills

- Chowan pulled to within two to make it a 12-10 game, but that would be the closest it would get

- Catawba blitzed Chowan with a 13-4 run after they pulled to within two, with streaks of three, four, four, and two points to put the game away and secure their first win of the year

Catawba is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 9 for their third and final game of the Chowan Tournament, taking on the Elizabeth City State Vikings at 10 a.m.
