Wingate Softball Sweeps Emory & Henry, 8-0 & 6-2, Saturday In SAC Doubleheader

WINGATE, N.C. – The Wingate University Softball Team (12-10, 4-0 SAC) picked up a pair of South Atlantic Conference wins over visiting Emory & Henry University (17-7, 1-3 SAC) Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs took the opener by an 8-0 score in six innings and closed out the sweep with a 6-2 victory.

Game One – Wingate 8, Emory & Henry 0 (six innings)
Wingate got on the board in the bottom of the first scoring a pair of runs on a double through the left side by Hali Scott. In the fifth, the Bulldogs pushed five across to make it a 7-0 contest. Raelynn Kramer opened the inning with a two-run double while Damyia McFadden and Lily Huneycutt also had run-scoring base knocks.

The sixth saw WU score the final run it needed to end the game early when Kaylee Furr drove in Bella Kraemer with a single to right field.

Jillian Thomas got the win in the circle, striking out 13 while allowing just three hits. E&H junior Malorie Reeves (Galax, Va.) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

Game Two – Wingate 6, Emory & Henry 2
The Bulldogs stormed out to a 6-0 lead in the first highlighted by a grand slam by Hannah Stevens. The E&H defense settled in and the Wasps finally got in the scoring column in the fifth as senior centerfielder Mackenzie Williams (St. Augustine, Fla.) drove in two with a double to the gap in right-center for what would be the final 6-2 score.

Lily Robbins won the game for Wingate, scattering two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts. Reeves again suffered the loss, with five earned runs on five hits in one inning.
