
Lions roll Erskine in SAC play on road
The Mars Hill football team (3-2, 3-1 SAC) defeated Erskine (2-4, 0-4 SAC) by a score of 33-13 Saturday evening.
DUE WEST, S.C. - The Mars Hill football team (3-2, 3-1 SAC) defeated Erskine (2-4, 0-4 SAC) by a score of 33-13 Saturday evening.
Mars Hill shutout Erskine in the first quarter, outscoring the Flying Fleet 10-0. Jervon Newton opened the scoring with 8:31 left in the quarter with a four-yard rush for the touchdown. With just over three minutes remaining in the first, Andre Labat split the uprights with a 26-yard field goal.
Mars Hill scored two rushing touchdowns in the second; a 14-yard run by Malik Laurent 4:07 into the quarter and with 6:32 left in the half, a four-yard run from Joraye Morrison.
The Lions opened the third with a safety against the Flying Fleet, running their lead up to 26-6 just 1:34 into the quarter. Morrison scored his second of the day with 2:05 left in the quarter, a six-yard run capping off a nine-play, 99-yard drive for the Lions.
Mars Hill outgained Erskine 436-190, rushing for 326 total yards and holding Erskine to just seven yards on the ground.
Newton led the Lions with 145 yards rushing, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Laurent led the Lions with 51 receiving yards followed by Ty Snelson's 47. Landon Honeycutt led the Lions with nine tackles followed by four apiece from Tristan Rankin, Jake Watson, and Damipi Lamboni.
The Lions return to Meares Stadium on Saturday, October 14 when they host Emory & Henry on Homecoming weekend. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
