Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Regionally-Ranked Wingate

HARTSVILLE, S.C- The Coker University baseball team split its doubleheader against regionally-ranked conference foe Wingate, dropping game one 4-1 and winning game two 5-3 on Sunday (Mar. 21)

 

Game one:

 

Wingate would strike early in the first from a sacrifice fly to center to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. 

 

Coker would score their lone run from a Bryan Castillo RBI sacrifice fly to right, scoring Reilly Hall after he reached on a Wingate fielding error. 

 

Neither team would score again until the fifth when Wingate would plate two runs to make it 3-1. 

 

The Bulldogs scored one more run in the sixth to take game one 4-1. 

 

Game Two

 

Wingate would score in the first to take a 1-0 lead into the fourth where they would plate two more runs to make it 3-0 headed to the bottom of the fourth. 

 

Coker would chip away at the Bulldog lead in the fourth when Phil Griffor would score off an RBI sacrifice fly to right to make it 3-1.

 

The Cobras would tie it up in the fifth when Hall would hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Lake Lybrand and Cam Murray.  

 

The go-ahead run would come in the sixth from Murray's RBI walk that scored Kristofer Blanco to make it 4-3.

 

Coker would add an insurance run in the seventh when Castillo's RBI single would score Drew Klaserner, who reached by a Bulldog fielding error to make the final game score 5-3. 

 

Griffin Hollifield (2-2) earned the win in game two. Hollifield pitched exceptionally in relief, scattering three hits and five strikeouts over five scoreless innings of work. 

 

Coker Baseball will be back in action at home on Friday (Mar. 26) for day one of a conference doubleheader series against Limestone, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. Live coverage can be found at www.cokercobras.com
