HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

The Patriots struck the opening salvo in the bottom of the first after a one-out double came around to score a few batters later, making it 1-0 on a two-out throwing error. Burroughs led off the second with an infield knock, but Limestone was unable to take advantage as the next three batters were retired quietly.

Sutton worked around a one-out double in the second and again in the third, leaving both runners stranded in scoring position, but the Saints would continue to trail, 1-0, with three innings in the books.

Innings 4-6

The Blue and Gold had an opportunity to string together some hits in the top of the fourth as Shugan pulled a one-out single into left. However, he was picked off at first and a two-out knock by Burroughs was left stranded before another one-out double by Francis Marion in the home half led to a big inning.

It looked like Sutton would once again wiggle out of the jam after giving up a fourth consecutive one-out double, but the Patriots used a two-out rally to bust through with three runs for a 4-0 lead. The Saints had a chance to dirty the clean sheet in the fifth as MacCallum laced a leadoff double down the leftfield chalk.

However, with the runner on third and one gone, the next two Saints struck out to leave MacCallum still standing 90-feet away before Francis Marion continued to add to its lead with a tally in the bottom half. The Patriots tacked on three more runs in the sixth behind a three-run blast to comfortably pull away, 8-0.

Innings 7-9

Burroughs put Limestone on the board in the top of the seventh, sending a towering homerun over the wall in left-center, but FMU would immediately get that run back in the next half inning. The Patriots then pushed the margin to double digits with two more runs in the eighth to finish off the series sweep, 11-1.

TURNING POINT

Limestone had a couple of opportunities to get on the board in the second inning and again in the fourth, but just could not string together enough base hits. Sutton was solid during that stretch though, getting around a pair of one-out doubles, before the Patriots finally got to him for three decisive runs in the fourth.

  • Burroughs combined to go 5-of-11 with a homerun and two runs scored this weekend
