Pioneers drop 4-2 SAC quarterfinal match to Carson-Newman

SUMTER, S.C. --- Carson-Newman University defeated Tusculum University 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

The 44th-ranked Eagles (11-7) avenged a regular-season loss to the 43rd-ranked Pioneers (14-8) by winning the doubles point, then taking three of the five completed singles matches against the defending tournameent champions.

The Eagles took the doubles point by winning the decisive match, after the Pioneers picked up a 6-3 victory at flight three with Thilda Danielsson and Johanna Palacio defeating Anita Chornei and Julia Speiser.

In singles, the Pioneers won the first set in four of the six matches. After the Eagles took a 2-0 lead with a straight-set win at flight five, Valentina Loretz gave the Pioneers their first point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Natasha Forrest at flight two. Paulina Loretz took a victory at flight four after her opponent retired in the second set, but the Eagles collected a straight-set win at flight three and a three-set win at flight six to clinch the victory.

Carson-Newman will take on top-seeded Wingate in the semifinals on Friday after the Bulldogs beat Anderson 4-1 in a quarterfinal match on Thursday.
