Lions drop tight game versus No. 11 Catawba
Terick Bumgarner goes 5-for-5 with two HR against No. 11 Catawba
MARS HILL, N.C. – The Mars Hill baseball team (4-13, 0-4 SAC) was defeated by No. 11 Catawba (12-4, 6-1 SAC) Friday afternoon.
The Lions put together a strong offensive performance with 19 hits and four home runs but couldn't hold off the league-leading Indians.
Catawba took an early 2-0 lead in the first, but Mars Hill responded with three runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from Chapel Matson. Jackson Jones added a two-run home run in the second to extend the lead to 5-3.
Catawba's offense broke through in the sixth inning, scoring five runs behind a home run from Dylan Driver and a two-run double from Cole Hales, giving them an 8-7 advantage.
The Indians added insurance runs in the later innings, including a solo home run from Hales and Driver's second homer of the game.
Mars Hill fought until the final inning, scoring three runs in the ninth, but their rally fell short.
TerickBumgarner led the Lions, going 5-for-5 with a home run, triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Matson finished 2-for-5 with a homer and a double, while Jones added two hits and two RBIs.
For Catawba, Driver went 5-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs, and Hales finished 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 1 when they wrap up the series with doubleheader. First pitch at Henderson Field is set for 11 a.m.
