Volleyball Swept by #24 Wingate at Home
SALISBURY, N.C. – The 24th-ranked Wingate volleyball team came to Catawba on Friday night and topped the host Catawba Indians in three sets in a South Atlantic Conference match at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs won the match by the scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-15 to improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Catawba is now 2-7 and 0-3.
It was a tough attacking night for Catawba with 19 kills to go with 23 hitting errors for a negative percentage. Kelcie Love and Raytchelle Miranda led the hosts with four kills each. Libero Kary Hales posted nine digs and served a pair of aces, while Miranda and Ashley Johnson each tallied a pair of blocks.
Wingate hit at 44% for the match and were led by Emma Ahrens with eight kills. Shannon Kasprak delivered 29 assists with 10 digs and Rayah Givens had three blocks.
Wingate jumped out to big leads in the first two sets. The Bulldogs held a 16-4 edge in set one and scored the first seven points of the second set. Catawba battled tighter in the final set, staying within 5-4 early and down just 12-9 after a kill from Love and an ace from Hales. Wingate eased away from that point, going on a run to push the margin to 20-12 and eventually taking the match.
Catawba is back in action at home on Saturday, hosting Coker at 2 p.m.
