
Lions split non-conference series with Lander
GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (3-1) split with Lander (2-2), dropping game one by a score of 8-2, but taking game two by a score of 10-2 Wednesday afternoon.
GAME ONE: LU 8, MHU 2
Lander led 6-0 after five innings. Maia Sholter's two-run home run in the top of the sixth broke the shutout bid. However, the Bearcats added two more runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the six-run advantage for the game one victory.
Linda Moore led all players with three hits while Bella Angeli led all players with four RBI.
Sholter led the Lions with two hits and two RBI. Sydney Hodges, Sara Rexrode, Camryn Sterling, and Daci Sarver each added a hit for Mars Hill.
GAME TWO: MHU 10, LU 2
After trailing 1-0 after two innings, Mars Hill scored seven in the top of the third. Farley Park's three-run home run opened the scoring for the Lions. Later, with the bases loaded, Riley Waters drove home Janiyah Glenn with a single through the left side, putting the Lions up 4-1.
Following a bases loaded walk drawn by Camryn Sterling along with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Meghan Murphy, Leah Grimes ended the scoring with a RBI double to left field, plating Waters.
Lander plated one in the bottom of the fifth, but Mars Hill, in the sixth and seventh, plated a run apiece to come away with the split.
Grimes led the Lions with three hits while Park, Waters, and Sydney Hodges each posted two hits apiece. Park led all players with three RBI.
For the complete game victory, Téa Cornett won her second game of the season. She allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out five.
The Lions return to the diamond on Friday, February 7 when they face Georgia College & State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
