
Mars Hill downs Erskine in non-conference play
The Mars Hill baseball team (8-11) defeated Erskine (8-12) by a score of 11-8 Tuesday afternoon at Henderson Field.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (8-11) defeated Erskine (8-12) by a score of 11-8 Tuesday afternoon at Henderson Field.
The Lions entered the second down 3-0, but a Chad Sikes' bases clearing triple tied the game. While racing to third, an Erskine error allowed Sikes to score the go-ahead run. Later in the frame, a wild pitch allowed Carter Potts to score, capping off a five-run second inning.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Tai Gilbert's RBI single through the right side scored Zach Weaver to put the Lions up 6-3. In the bottom of the sixth, Sikes picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a bunt single up the first base line, allowing Luke Hayes to score. Sikes later scored off of Potts' RBI double.
In the bottom of the seventh, Alex Naran blasted a solo home run down the left field line. The Lions plated two more in the bottom of the eighth with RBI doubles off the bats of Elec Yount and Weaver.
Sikes led the Lions with four RBI and three runs scored while adding two hits. Jaden James led the team with three hits. Potts, Yount, and Naran each added two hits apiece.
Dustin Dunlap got the start, going 2.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out four. Brian Smart was credited with the win, allowing one hit while striking out one in 1.0 inning thrown.
The Lions take on Tusculum on Friday, March 8 in South Atlantic Conference action. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on the road.
