
Mars Hill falls to Wingate on Senior Day
The Mars Hill softball team (6-28, 3-17 SAC) was defeated by scores of 4-1 and 12-1 versus Wingate (32-15, 14-6 SAC) Friday afternoon.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (6-28, 3-17 SAC) was defeated by scores of 4-1 and 12-1 versus Wingate (32-15, 14-6 SAC) Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE: WU 4, MHU 1
The Bulldogs took game one by a score of 4-1.
After two scoreless innings, Sydney Kale's two-run home run in the top of the third gave the Bulldogs the 2-0 advantage heading into the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, Maggie Langheim blasted a solo home run over the center field fence to cut the deficit to one.
Kale scored her second run of the game in the top of the fifth off of a Hannah Stevens' double to left field. In the top of the sixth, Wingate added an insurance run with a solo home run off the bat of Sara Stroud, just inside the left foul pole.
Both Stroud and Kale recorded two hits in the game. Kale earned the win, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out six in the complete game. Kayla Gallagher was credited with the loss, striking out six in seven innings pitched.
GAME TWO: WU 12, MHU 1 (5 Innings)
Six Wingate batters recorded two hits in game two as the offense put up 12 runs to complete the sweep.
Wingate plated three in the top of the second, highlighted by Savanna Brooks' two-run home run. In the bottom half of the frame, Farley Park launched the ball over the center field fence for a solo home run, entering the third down 3-1.
The Bulldogs went on to score nine unanswered runs to end the contest, highlighted by Hannah Stevens' three-run shot over the left field fence to run the score to 8-1 in the top of the third.
Brooks recorded four RBI while Stevens added three. Hali Scott picked up the win, striking out seven and allowing one run on two hits in five innings. Deja Smith suffered the loss.
Prior to the start of the contest, seniors Sydney Craig and Maggie Langheim were recognized for their contributions to the softball program.
The Lions close out their home slate on Tuesday, April 19 when they face Limestone. First pitch at Ponder Field is set for 1 p.m.
