HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The Bears took their opening drive 67 yards, highlighted by a 36-yard pickup on 3
rd-and-11, but the Limestone defense held firm in the redzone as Lenoir-Rhyne settled for a 28-yard field goal. The defense once again stonewalled the Bears in the redzone on the ensuing possession, keeping them off the board.
After the Saints went 3-and-out, Lenoir-Rhyne finally solved Limestone's redzone defense following a 48-yard run that moved the ball inside the 5-yard line before scoring on a three-yard run, making it 10-0 with 3:57 left in the quarter. Limestone collected three first downs but had just three rushing yards in the first.
Second Quarter
Facing a 3
rd-and-12 on the first play of the second, Beamish hit
Mikey Jones for 35 yards down the middle of the field before a roughing the passer call put the Saints at the 18-yard line. Limestone would not gain another yard and came away empty-handed as the resulting 35-yard field goal try by Baker was blocked.
The Bears capitalized with a long 10-play, 80-yard drive – a possession that was kept alive with a 28-yard pass on 3
rd-and-11 – before freshman RB Dewayne McGee capped the drive with a 5-yard TD run. The Saints was forced to give the ball back to LR, who made it 24-0 at the break with a 25-yard scoring run.
Third Quarter
Limestone got the ball to start the second half but went backwards before disaster struck two plays into the period. A completed pass to senior WR
Jadarius Hector (Stapleton, Ga.) for a six-yard loss was coughed up before it was recovered by the defense and returned for a defensive score to make it 31-0.
Lenoir-Rhyne continued to pour it on as another defensive three-and-out gave the Bears the ball at midfield. Seven plays and 55 yards later, they pushed the margin to 38-0 on a 10-yard catch-and-run.
The Saints moved into LR territory as Beamish hit
Mikey Jones in stride for a 54-yard pick up – the longest play of the day for Limestone. The drive stalled, leading Limestone to it only points of the day on 46-yard field goal by Baker, but the Bears put the game away, 45-3, with a 15-play, 75-yard scoring drive.
Fourth Quarter
The defense made a pair of stops in the fourth before the Blue and Gold put together its most promising drive of the day. In relief of Beamish, Braxton picked up a first down with a 12-yard scramble – the team's longest run of the day – before finding Smith for 16 yards and
Kodi Jones for 22 yards. On 4
th-and-7, back-to-back delay of game calls would put the Saints at 4
th-and-17 and keep them out of the endzone.
TURNING POINT
The Limestone defense was tough in the redzone early, limiting the Bears to just three points during their first two trips. However, the Saints were unable to generate any offense on two quick possessions in the first quarter before Lenoir-Rhyne broke through with a TD run, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
NOTABLES
- The Saints had five different plays that finished with at least five tackles
- Juniors Ray'Quan Ryant (Orangeburg, S.C.) Chandler Corley (Columbia, S.C.) each had a tackle for loss as part of their five-tackle performances
- Senior Ken'Darius Frederick (Rock Hill, S.C.) added a breakup and quarterback hurry
