Limestone Baseball Honors Eight on Senior Day

GAFFNEY, S.C. – The Limestone University baseball team closed out its 2022 home schedule by honoring eight seniors, including late teammate Tyler O'Dell* (North Hanover, N.J.), prior to the team's doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday, April 9, at Founders FCU Stadium.

Prior to the game, the team recognized graduate Brandt Cronebach (Englewood, Ohio), senior Jacob Wicker (Prosperity, S.C.), graduate Justin Grieder (Ridgeway, S.C.), senior Branden May (Blythewood, S.C.), graduate Garrett Sutton (Gastonia, S.C.), redshirt-junior Tyler Smith (Riverside, Calif.), and senior Jacob Walker (San Jose, Calif.) while remembering O'Dell who passed away on November 18, 2021.

In a touching moment, head coach Brett Harker had O'Dell batting ninth in the starting lineup at shortstop.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Sophomore Dylan Shugan (Alpharetta, Ga.) went 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a steal
  • Junior Brandon Billesberger (Cochrane, Alberta) added a hit and two stolen bases
  • Sophomore Gianni Lombardo (Statham, Ga.) chipped in a base knock for Limestone
  • Junior James MacCallum (Atlanta, Ga.) finished with a walk for the Saints
  • Sophomore Peyton Reel (Clover, S.C.) also added a base on balls
  • Junior starter Sergio Patsy (Indian Trail, S.C.) struck out six over six solid innings
  • Patsy scattered four runs on seven hits and three walks, but fell to 0-7 on the season
  • Junior reliver Walker Sigman (Austin, Texas) struck out five Railsplitters over three innings

HOW IT HAPPENED

After Patsy worked around a leadoff walk in the first, the Saints had something working in the home half as Billesberger laced a one-out single to right before ripping off second. Shugan followed with a walk before he and Billesberger executed a double steal, putting a pair in scoring position with just one gone.

However, Limestone was unable to take advantage as the runner on third was picked off and a strikeout bookended a walk by MacCallum to leave two men stranded. Lincoln Memorial capitalized with a two-out rally in the second, using three straight hits, including back-to-back two-run singles, to move in front, 4-0.

Reel started the bottom of the second off with a free pass before Lombardo punched a one-out single through the right side in the fourth. The Blue and Gold would not advance either runner, but Patsy managed to keep the Saints in the game and the deficit at four by retiring 10 of the next 12 Railsplitters.

The offense could not establish any momentum, however, as LMU sat down 15 straight Limestone batters before Shugan singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Lincoln Memorial tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top half of the inning to take the opening game and the series win with a 6-0 win.

GAME 2 INFORMATION

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Shugan homered in the series finale, his seventh homerun of the season
  • MacCallum doubled for the Saints while Billesberger added a base knock
  • Junior Joah Nelson (Woodruff, S.C.) went 1-for-3 in the nightcap for Limestone
  • Sophomore starter Jake Contino (Mooresville, N.C.) finished with five strikeouts over five innings
  • Contino took the loss though, falling to 0-3, despite only allowing three runs – two of those earned
  • Walker and May both combined to toss a scoreless inning in their final home game

HOW IT HAPPENED

Similar to the start of game one of Saturday's doubleheader, Contino worked around a leadoff walk and a pair of stolen bases by striking out the final two batters of the inning. Limestone went down in order in the home half of the first before the Railsplitters capitalized on a double to start the second for a 1-0 cushion.

The Saints appeared that they would even things up in the bottom half after MacCallum ripped a leadoff double down the leftfield line before moving over to third on a sacrifice by Nelson. However, the Blue and Gold would leave the tying run standing 90 feet away as the next two batters were both sat down quietly.

Contino danced around another walk to begin the fourth, leaving two stranded in the frame, before he left the bases full of Railsplitters in the top of the fourth. The Saints could not ignite a rally following two-out knocks by Billesberger in the third and Nelson in the fourth before LMU pushed the lead to 3-0 in the fifth.

Lincoln Memorial made it 5-0 with two more runs in the sixth before Limestone got on the board with a solo homerun by Shugan in the bottom of the stanza – his seventh of the year. That was the closest things would get as the Saints went down in order in the seventh as the Railsplitters finished the sweep.

UP NEXT

The Saints will close out the 2022 season with four straight games on the road, starting with a nonconference game at Southern Wesleyan University on Tuesday, April 12, at 5 p.m.
