Lions down Young Harris in late inning rally
Mars Hill plates four unanswered to take win on road.
YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The Mars Hill baseball team (6-18) defeated Young Harris (15-8) by a score of 14-13 on the road Tuesday afternoon.
The Lions trailed 13-10 entering the eighth before scoring four unanswered runs to complete the comeback.
In the eighth, Terick Bumgarner's RBI single was the catalyst for the comeback bid. Max LaLime's RBI double pulled the Lions within one, plating Caleb Smith. To tie the game, Jackson Jones grounded out to second, allowing Bumgarner to score Mars Hill's 13th run.
Chapel Matson capped off the win with a solo home run in the top of the ninth, his fourth hit and second RBI of the game.
Matson opened the scoring in the top of the first, plating the first of five runs in the frame with a RBI single to into left field, scoring Elec Yount. Bumgarner extend the lead to two with a RBI single that scored Matson.
Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Jones cleared the bases with a double to right center field, picking up three RBI.
Young Harris rattled off seven straight runs over four innings, taking a 7-5 lead into the sixth inning.
With the bases loaded, Walker Fox cranked a grand slam over the right field fence to retake the lead, 9-7.
Yount and Matson led all players with four hits while Fox and Jones led the team with four RBI apiece. Bumgarner and Jones each added three hits.
Reid Withers was credited with his second win of the season, throwing a scoreless eighth inning. Seth Coxie picked up his first save of the season, throwing a scoreless ninth.
The Lions return to South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, March 14 when they face Newberry on the road. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
