Lions roar past Ashland, 16-11
The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-2) defeated Ashland (1-2) by a score of 16-11 inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Thursday evening.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill women's lacrosse team (3-2) defeated Ashland (1-2) by a score of 16-11 inside the Ammons Family Athletic Center and Meares Stadium Thursday evening.
The teams entered the half tied at five before Mars Hill's offense took over in the second half. Maria Fabrizio scored the first goal of the half just 31 seconds in to give Mars Hill a 6-5 advantage. Sofia Michael knotted the game at six one minute later, but the Lions responded with four straight goals.
Mars Hill's Scout Black began the scoring run for Mars Hill with her sixth of the season. Kiersten Foust netted her 15th of the season with 21:48 left in the contest on a free position to Mars Hill up 8-6. Molly Tobias scored two goals in a row, just 1:01 apart to send the Lions to a four-goal lead with just over 16 minutes remaining in the contest.
Ashland's Renee Ruppert's hat-trick marker slowed the Lions momentarily, but two Lions' markers from Rebecca Dallman and Foust 17 seconds apart gave the Lions a 12-7 lead with just over 12 minutes to play. The Eagles' Haley Abraszek scored on a free position to cut Mars Hill's lead down to four, but the Lions responded with two more goals from the sticks of Victoria Eckard and Black.
The Eagles outscored Mars Hill 4-2 in the final 9:40, but could never pull closer than three goals as Mars Hill came away with the 16-11 win.
Ruppert opened the scoring for Ashland, scoring two of the first three Eagles' goals as they took a 3-1 lead after the first 9:03 played. Mars Hill scored three of the next four goals to tied the game at four. Tobias' 14th goal of the season came on a free position with a man down to tie the game. Abraszek's first goal of the contest provided the Eagles the 5-4 lead, but with under a minute to play, Foust knotted the game up at five.
Michael collected a team-high six points (4g, 2a) for the Eagles in the loss. Ruppert added five (3g, 2a) on the night. Fabrizio led the Lions with six points, recording a game-high five assists. Foust led all players with five goals.
Alexa Holleran made 17 saves in the winning effort while Corynn Schneider made 11 stops in the loss.
Mars Hill begins a five-game road trip on Tuesday, March 12th when they take on Alderson Broaddus. Action is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
