Lander comes back late to down MHU
Carter Potts drives in five in final game of series.
GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (3-9) was defeated by Lander (5-5) by a score of 9-8 Saturday afternoon on the road.
Lander trailed 6-0 after four and 6-1 after six. The Bearcats reeled off eight runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Mario Lopez Jr.'s bases clearing three-run double.
The Lions clawed to within one off of Carter Pott's two-run single in the top of the ninth, scoring Jackson Jones and Caleb Smith. The single marked Potts' fifth RBI of the game.
Mars Hill opened the contest with three runs in the first. Potts extended the Lions' lead to five in the second with his first two-run single of the game, plating Jones and Evan Grant. Grant later put the Lions up by six in the top of the fourth, scoring off of a Lander wild pitch.
Evan Wickeri and Grant Sherrod led all players with three hits.
Potts led the Lions with two hits and led all players with five RBI. Jones scored a game-high three runs followed by two from Grant.
Brennan Williams threw a strong seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six in the no decision.
Mars Hill returns to the diamond on Wednesday, February 18 when they face Southern Wesleyan on the road. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
