CENTRAL, S.C. - The Mars Hill baseball team (4-9) defeated Southern Wesleyan (2-10) by a score of 10-9 in 11 innings Tuesday night.
Mars Hill trailed 8-4 heading into the top of the ninth. Cutting the deficit down to two following a bases loaded walk and fielder's choice, Chape Matson's two-run double to left center cleared the bases to tie the game at eight.
In the top of the 10th, Jackson Jones' sacrifice fly plated Max LaLime for the go-ahead run. The Warriors tied it in the bottom of the frame, forcing an 11th. LaLime's infield single scored Carter Potts in the top half of the inning, proving to be the game-winning run.
A back-and-forth affair in the first three innings saw Southern Wesleyan pull away in the fourth following Cam Mitchem's two-run home run. They extended the lead to four in the bottom of the fifth as Niko Laing drove home Vincent Angle with a single to right field.
The Lions plated one apiece in the sixth and seventh, highlighted by Toby Troutman's solo shot in the seventh inning.
LaLime, Troutman, and Terick Bumgarner led the team with two hits apiece while Matson led the squad with two RBI.
Seth Coxie picked up the win, throwing 4.0, allowing one run on three hits, striking out four.
Mars Hill opens South Atlantic Conference play on Friday, February 21 when they face Anderson on the road. First pitch of the series opener is set for 4 p.m.
