
Lions sweep Catawba for first SAC wins
The Mars Hill softball team (5-13, 2-4 SAC) swept the Indians of Catawba (4-13, 0-3 SAC) in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
SALISBURY, N.C. – The Mars Hill softball team (5-13, 2-4 SAC) swept the Indians of Catawba (4-13, 0-3 SAC) in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon.
GAME ONE: MHU 5, CAT 2
The Lions took game one by a score of 5-2 thanks to a hot start from their offense. The Lions tallied all five runs within the first two innings due to a Farley Park RBI double that plated Maggie Langheim in the top half of the first, followed by a grand slam off the bat of Sydney Craig in the second inning that scored Alyssa Christopher, Maegan Blair, and Peyton Duba.
The Indians attempted a comeback with a solo home run coming from Sommer Gray and an RBI double from Gracyn Bennet that plated Bailey Benton.
Kayla Gallagher started the game for the Lions, throwing six complete innings and struck out three to earn the win. Deja Smith came into the circle to close the game for the Lions, not allowing a single hit, and recording her first save of the season. Catawba's Salem Finney was given the loss after throwing four innings and giving up five runs on four hits.
GAME TWO: MHU 8, CAT 4
The Lions took game two by a score of 8-4 after holding off an Indians' rally late in the game.
Mars Hill owned the scoring column through the first five innings of play with runs coming from Craig, Christopher, Langheim, and Zoie Pistel.
Following a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth from Catawba's Madison Taylor, Marissa Adame responded by sending a solo shot deep over the left field wall to bring the Lions' lead to seven. In the bottom of the seventh, Catawba would go on to score three runs due to a double in the left-center gap from Savanna Balderston.
Adame pitched a complete game for the Lions and struck out nine batter to earn the win while Catawba's Kary Hales was given the loss after going 2.1 innings and allowing a pair of runs.
The Lions are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Tusculum Pioneers in Greenville, Tennessee. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
