
Mars Hill falls to No. 24 Wingate on road
The Mars Hill volleyball team (10-1, 6-1 SAC) was defeated in three sets (14-25, 21-25, 19-25) Friday night versus No. 24 Wingate (15-1, 6-0 SAC).
WINGATE, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (10-1, 6-1 SAC) was defeated in three sets (14-25, 21-25, 19-25) Friday night versus No. 24 Wingate (15-1, 6-0 SAC).
Wingate dominated the first set, hitting .230 as a team and holding Mars Hill to -.133 as a squad. The Bulldogs knocked down 12 kills in the first frame and while leading 7-6, went on a 13-0 run to runaway with the frame.
Mars Hill battled in the second, hitting a team-high .310 with nine kills on 29 attempts, but Wingate's 18 kills and .262 hitting percentage led them to take a 2-0 lead heading into the third. Late in the second, trailing 21-20, the Bulldogs were able to take five straight points with Maggie Young recording two kills in that span.
Wingate's offense hit a game-high .355 to put away the Lions, 25-19, in the final frame and hand Mars Hill their first loss of the 2022 season.
Gabby Saye led all players with 12 kills while Shannon Kasprak had a game-high 39 assists. The Lions were led offensively by Sarah Goddard with her 10 kills on the night. Jordan Schmucker recorded a double-double with 14 assists and 12 digs while Emma Vacha led the Lions with three blocks.
Mars Hill takes on Coker on Saturday, September 24 with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
