HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
A pair of kills by Williams and a service ace from Gardella got the night started for the Saints before Curran logged three kills to stake the Blue and Gold to a quick 7-2 lead. Coker answered with a 6-3 run, but an attack from Williams sparked a 3-0 spurt as Limestone built up a 13-8 cushion in the early stages.
Coming out of a timeout, Coker rattled off five of the next seven points to close the margin to 15-13, but the Saints would end the frame with a 10-3 stretch. Blas finished with three kills during the decisive run before Williams closed out the set win, 25-16, with an attack to give the Blue and Gold a 1-0 match lead.
Second Set
After spotting the Cobras the opening point in the second set, Limestone moved in front, 3-1, behind a kill by Curran and an ace from Blas. Coker kept things close at 6-4 a few moments later, but an attack from Wilcox Nanai and two kills by Blas highlighted a 5-2 mini-run to stake the Saints to an 11-6 advantage.
The visitors pulled to within 15-13 midway through the set, but Limestone used another 10-3 surge to close out the stanza and grab a 2-0 match edge. Blas and Curran combined for five three kills to fuel the run while senior
Madeline Yeager (Sacramento, Calif.) and Gardella each added an ace in the 25-16 win.
Third Set
Coker stormed out of the gate in the third set with leads of 4-1 and 7-3, but the Saints battled back with a 10-6 stretch to even things up at 13-all. Blas and Williams each dropped in a kill during that span while Curran chipped in two kills, but the Cobras took the set, 25-17, with a long 12-4 run down the final stretch.
Fourth Set
The teams exchanged the first two points of the fourth set, but Limestone would quickly take control as Blas tallied three service aces and a kill to power a 7-0 run. Coker tried to keep it close, pulling to within 11-5, but the Saints ran away with the match win by closing out the frame with a dominating 14-2 surge.
The Blue and Gold recorded nine unanswered points, getting three kills from Wilcox Nanai before Williams closed the run with an ace. A block by Wilcox Nanai then helped end the match with a 25-7 win.
