
Mars Hill romps Emory & Henry on Homecoming
The Mars Hill football team (4-2, 4-1 SAC) defeated Emory & Henry (4-3, 3-2 SAC) by a score of 49-14 Saturday afternoon on Homecoming weekend.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill football team (4-2, 4-1 SAC) defeated Emory & Henry (4-3, 3-2 SAC) by a score of 49-14 Saturday afternoon on Homecoming weekend.
Ty Snelson opened the scoring in the first quarter with 5:10 gone, rushing for 14 yards and the first of seven Lions' touchdowns.
Less than a minute into the second quarter, Malik Laurent was on the receiving end of a 37-yard pass from Jimmy Urzua. Mars Hill added two more scores in the half, both ran in by Jervon Newton on a two-yard carry and, with less than 1:30 remaining in the second, punching it in from a yard out.
Mars Hill carried a 28-0 lead into the half.
The Wasps broke the shutout bid just 3:45 into the third quarter as Kashawn Cosey reeled in a 31-yard pass from Kyle Short.
Mars Hill responded with two scores just 20 seconds apart. With 8:48 left in the third, Newton ran for his third touchdown of the day from 15-yards out. On the third play of the ensuing Wasps drive, Monroe Sanderson picked off Kyle Short's pass and returned it 40 yards to put the Lions up 42-7.
Capping off the Lions' scoring on the afternoon was Leondre Andreas with a two-yard rush for his first career touchdown.
The Lions outgained Emory & Henry 498 to 214 on the day as they racked up 272 passing yards and 226 on the ground. Urzua went 12-of-17 for 207 yards and one touchdown while Newton rushed for 151 yards on 29 carries for three touchdowns.
Snelson led the Lions with 114 receiving yards and finished the day with 128 total yards of offense.
Landon Honeycutt led the Lions' defense with five tackles while Sanderson, Octaveus Askew, and Tristan Rankin each intercepted a pass on the afternoon.
The Lions host Carson-Newman on Saturday, October 22. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in the penultimate home game of the season.
