Wise, Va. —- The 19th-ranked Catawba College baseball team earned a Friday split of their doubleheader behind Payne Stolsworth's stellar complete-game performance on the mound in game two in South Atlantic Conference action.

 

GAME ONE | UVA Wise 12, Catawba 2 - 7 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- UVA Wise out-hit Catawba 13-6

- The Cavaliers recorded all six extra-base hits and all three homers

- The Catawba Indians committed the lone error in the game

- Wise left five runners on base; Catawba stranded seven

- Both teams recorded two stolen bases

- UVA Wise pitchers allowed two runs on six hits and four walks, striking out nine; Catawba's staff allowed 11 earned runs on 13 hits and five walks, striking out four

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Matthew Connolly singled, walked twice and drove in a run

- James Dunlap singled and drove in a run

- Dylan Driver and Sam Hunter both singled and scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- A two-run homer, a two-run triple and a passed ball gave the Cavaliers an early 5-0 lead after the first

 

SECOND INNING

- Wise's Joshua Morgan added an RBI double in the second to push their lead to six

 

THIRD INNING

- Catawba got two aboard to start the third

- Dunlap helped get Catawba on the board with a single through the left side

 

FOURTH INNING

- Hunter singled and stole second and third in the fourth

- Connolly's RBI single pulled Catawba to 6-2

 

FIFTH INNING

- The Cavaliers' Jake Smith blew the game open in the fifth with a three-run homer

 

SIXTH INNING

 - A solo homer in the sixth made it 10-2 

 

SEVENTH INNING

- An error and a bases-loaded walk extended their lead to 12-2, ending the game via mercy rule

 

GAME TWO | Catawba 2, UVA Wise 0 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit UVA Wise 5-2

- The Catawba Indians recorded the lone extra-base hit in game two

- The Cavaliers left two runners on base; Catawba stranded five

- Catawba recorded three of four stolen bases in the contest

- Catawba threw seven shutout innings on two hits, striking out six; Wise's pitchers allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks, striking out 11

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Stolsworth faced just two more than the minimum, extending his shutout innings streak to 16; the reigning SAC Pitcher of the Year retired the last 13 batters he faced

- Driver singled, walked and scored twice

- Cooper Bryson doubled

- Dunlap drove in a run on a single

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FOURTH INNING

- Driver singled and stole second with two out in the fourth

- Dunlap's RBI single up the middle broke the scoreless tie

 

SIXTH INNING

- A single split two walks to loaded the bases for Catawba with one out

- A passed ball allowed Driver to score, adding an extra run of insurance

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba and UVA Wise are set for the rubber match on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Catawba's streak of 13 consecutive series wins in SAC play on the line
