
Late inning rallies by Cobras down Mars Hill
The Mars Hill softball team (6-24, 3-15 SAC) was defeated by Coker (13-25, 3-13 SAC) in both games Saturday by scores of 5-3 and 9-8.
HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (6-24, 3-15 SAC) was defeated by Coker (13-25, 3-13 SAC) in both games Saturday by scores of 5-3 and 9-8.
GAME ONE: COK 5, MHU 3
Coker scored four unanswered runs to take game one by a score of 5-3.
Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, a solo home run by Caitlyn Wray pulled the game within one. In the bottom of the fifth, Delaney Eaves' RBI single tied the game at three. Later in the inning, Ava Jay drove in two with a triple to left center field.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly from Farley Park, scoring Peyton Duba. In the top of the third, Sydney Craig hit a solo home run to left field to put the Lions up by two. Coker broke the shutout bid in the bottom of the third with a Bailey Douglas RBI single.
Deja Smith's RBI single in the top of the fourth scored Zoie Pistel, reestablishing the two-run lead.
Smith and Chloe Pelham led their respective teams with three hits apiece. Brandi Davis earned her third win of the season, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit. Jordyn Goodman picked up her first save of the year. Kayla Gallagher was credited with the loss, allowing five runs on 12 hits in six innings.
GAME TWO: COK 9, MHU 8
A RBI single off the bat of Ava Jay in the bottom of the seventh secured Coker's sweep Saturday afternoon.
The Cobras trailed 8-7 entering the bottom of the sixth, but a Bailey Douglas triple to right center tied the game at eight, scoring Chloe Pelham.
Coker led 3-1 after the first inning with Pelham, Douglas, and Kayla Oswell all recording RBI. A solo home run from Maggie Langheim, her first of the game, cut the deficit to one. In the top of the fourth, trailing 5-2, Langheim's second solo shot of the day was the catalyst for a Mars Hill four-run inning, regaining the lead.
The Cobras tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-6 lead entering the fifth. Katie Todd's infield single plated Mikayla King to tie the game at seven. A Cobras' error in the top of the sixth allowed Sydney Craig to score the go-ahead run.
Pistel and Pelham led their respective teams with three hits apiece. Pelham led all players with four runs scored while Craig led all players with three RBI.
Jordyn Goodman recorded her first win of the season, allowing just one run on two hits in 2.1 innings. Kayla Gallagher suffered her second loss of the day, allowing two runs on four hits in 2.2 innings pitched.
The Lions return to the diamond on Sunday, April 10 in non-conference action versus USC Aiken. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
