Softball falls in both ends of Thursday pair vs Wingate

Salisbury, N.C. —- The Catawba College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Wingate in South Atlantic Conference play at Whitley Field on Thursday.

 

GAME ONE | Wingate 10, Catawba 2 - 5 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Wingate out-hit Catawba 9-2

- The Bulldogs had four of five extra-base hits, each coming via the home run

- Both teams committed an error

- Wingate left two runners on base; Catawba stranded four

- WU stole two of three bases

- The Bulldog pitchers allowed two runs on two hits and five walks, striking out three; Catawba's staff allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out two

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Christina Brendle drove in a run on a double and scored

- Savanna Balderston recorded Catawba's other hit; Kary Hales drove in a run

- Kate Holland allowed one earned run in 3.2 innings of relief

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Wingate's Hannah Stevens lifted a two-out homer in the top of the first

- Grace Flynn walked and stole second to lead off the bottom half

- Brendle drove her in on an RBI double to right center

- Two foul outs moved Brendle to third and scored her, as Catawba led early 2-1

 

SECOND INNING

- Wingate loaded the bases with one out in the second

- An infield single and a grand slam put the Bulldogs up 6-2

- Stevens later hit a two-run homer to left to make it 8-2

- The Bulldogs added their eighth run of the inning on a wild pitch

 

THIRD INNING

- Brooks' solo homer finished the scoring in game one

 

GAME TWO | Wingate 8, Catawba 5

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Wingate 8-7

- The Bulldogs recorded three of five extra-base hits; both teams homered

- The Catawba Indians committed the lone error in game two

- Both teams left six runners on base

- Wingate's pitchers allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out four; Catawba's staff allowed six earned runs on seven hits and six walks, striking out three

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Hales homered to drive in three

- Brendle singled, drove in a run and scored

- Courtnee Carter doubled as a part of two hits and scored

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SECOND INNING

- Wingate's two-out triple to center field scored the game's first run

 

THIRD INNING

- A Catawba error allowed the third inning to continue, and Stevens made them pay with a two-out, two-run homer to left field, taking a 3-0 lead

 

FOURTH INNING

- Two RBI singles, a run scored on a wild pitch and an RBI groundout pushed the Bulldog lead to 7-0

 

FIFTH INNING

- Brianna Gallagher scored a run with two outs on a single to center field to get Catawba on the board in game two

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Wingate added a run of insurance in the top of the seventh with an RBI single

- Carter doubled to lead off the seventh and Brendle's RBI single up the middle scored her

- Hales' three-run homer brought Catawba within three runs with two outs in the seventh

- Catawba continues SAC play on the road this weekend, traveling to Emory & Henry with a doubleheader set for 1 and 3 p.m.
