
Lions open SAC play versus Carson-Newman
The Mars Hill softball team (5-8, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Carson-Newman (12-1, 2-0 SAC) by scores of 11-2 and 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in their South Atlantic Conference opening series.
MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill softball team (5-8, 0-2 SAC) was defeated by Carson-Newman (12-1, 2-0 SAC) by scores of 11-2 and 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in their South Atlantic Conference opening series.
GAME ONE: C-N 11, MHU 2 (5 Innings)
The Eagles scored 11 runs over four innings to take game one in five innings. Kennady Warder opened the scoring in the first with a RBI groundout. In the second, the Eagles tacked on two more runs.
Mary Vandergriff extended the lead to six in the top of the third with a three-run home run to left. Brooke Matyasovsky's two-run home run was the highlight of Carson-Newman's 5-0 run in the fourth.
The Lions broke the shutout bid in the bottom of the fifth as Amber McLaren's single to center plated Ella Brooks. She later scored off of a single to left field off the bat of Miranda Marks.
Three Eagles recorded two hits in the contest while Vandergriff led all players with three RBI. Marks led the Lions with two hits in the contest.
Rylee Gattis picked up her third win of the season, allowing two hits in four innings. Alyssa Poston was credited with the loss, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings thrown.
GAME TWO: C-N 5, MHU 0
The Eagles completed the sweep, shutting the Lions out 5-0 in game two.
Macauley Bailey posted two solo home runs while Brooke Matyasovsky added another solo shot. Following a double steal in the top of the sixth, Carmen Holt capped off the scoring with a RBI single to right.
Alyssa Poston recorded the lone Mars Hill hit of the contest.
Syerra Rogers struck out 15 in the one-hit complete game. Kristen Ezzo was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits in five innings while striking out five.
The Lions return to the diamond on Saturday, February 25 when they host Belmont Abbey in non-conference action. First pitch at Ponder Field is set for 12 p.m.
