HOW IT HAPPENED

Innings 1-3

Limestone grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, capitalizing on a one-out walk by Huber after Towle followed up with his lone base knock of the afternoon. With runners on second and third and still one out, Evans put the Blue and Gold on top by a run with a sacrifice fly to right.

Johnson was effective against the Carson-Newman lineup in the early going, retiring nine of the first 10 batters with four strikeouts over his first three innings of work. The junior southpaw allowed just one base runner the first time through the home lineup – a two-out single in the bottom half of the second.

Innings 4-6

The Eagles knotted things up in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single, but the Saints answered with the go-ahead score in the fifth. Evans started the inning with a double into the right-centerfield alley before Whetsell followed two batters later with an RBI knock through the right side, making it a 2-1 game.

Limestone loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, but the visitors were not able to take advantage before the home team pushed across the equalizer in the home half.

Innings 7-9

After the Saints left a pair of runners stranded in the top of the seventh, the Eagles busted through with a crooked number in the bottom of the frame. Following a leadoff single, Carson-Newman regained the lead – this time for good – on back-to-back one-out doubles and a two-out RBI single back up the middle.

Huber blasted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in rightfield in the eighth, closing the gap to 5-3, before the Blue and Gold brought the tying run to the plate following a one-out walk by Evans. The next two batters were retired quietly, however, before Carson-Newman closed out the 6-3 win with a two-out run in the eighth.

TURNING POINT

Limestone left nine men on the base paths over the first seven innings, including leaving the bases full in the fifth, allowing the Eagles to come through with three markers in the bottom of the seventh. The Saints brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth, but could not come up with a big hit in the late going.

NOTABLES

  • Since scoring 14 runs against Lenoir-Rhyne a week ago, Limestone has combined for just 11 runs over its last four games
  • During the four-game skid, the Saints have struck out 38 times while leaving 38 men on base
  • Huber recorded the fourth homerun of his rookie campaign
  • The middle of the Limestone order (3-5) went 0-for-12 with eight strikeouts
