
Lions sweep Railsplitters in first meeting of season

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Mars Hill volleyball team (13-10, 10-6 SAC) defeated Lincoln Memorial (6-17, 5-11 SAC) in straight sets Tuesday evening.
Mars Hill stormed out to a dominant 7-1 lead to open the contest. The Lions continued to put on the pressure and convert on their opportunities throughout the frame, hitting .390 in the set with Sarah Goddard's seven kills leading the way. Mars Hill took the first set by a score of 25-12.
In a more tightly contested second set, the Railsplitters found themselves trailing 15-8. Yileen Ng He recorded two kills and two blocks in Lincoln Memorial's 8-1 run to tie the game at 16 all. They would later take the lead at 20-19 late in the frame. Following a Railsplitters' service error, the Lions took five straight points to close out the second set, 25-20, and enter the third with a 2-0 advantage.
Sally Anne Johnson's four kills paced the Lions offense in the third set as Mars Hill cruised to the three-set victory. The Lions led by as many as 12 midway through the frame before Lincoln Memorial made a late push. Trailing 17-9, the Railsplitters reeled off eight of the next nine points to pull within five. Trading points down the stretch, a kill from Eriana Ansley ultimately ended the match for Mars Hill.
Goddard led all players with 10 kills and added 17 digs for her third straight double-double. She's recorded double-digit kills in seven straight contests. Ansley hit a game-high .444 followed by Johnson's .409. Ully Martins led all players with 23 digs while Sara Pasour had a team-high 17 assists.
The Lions kickoff a four-game roadtrip Friday night when they take on Catawba at 7 p.m.
