Coker Falls at No. 25 Wingate in Conference Action on Tuesday

WINGATE, N.C. - The Coker University volleyball team dropped its South Atlantic Conference match at No. 25 Wingate on Tuesday (Sept. 17) by a score of 3-0. 

The 25th-ranked Bulldogs took the opening set 25-9, starting the set out on a 5-0 run and eventually growing their lead to 12-3. Coker was aided by four Wingate service errors in the opening set. Olivia Cerick (two) and Taylor du Bray recorded kills in the opening set for Coker. 

 Coker went point-for-point for most of the second set, before Wingate would ultimately win the set 25-21. Wingate jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the second set, before the Cobras would storm back to tie the set at 11-all. The two teams battled back and forth well into the set, at one point being deadlocked at 19. Wingate would go on a 6-2 run from there to win the set. Despite dropping the set, Coker turned in a solid set defensively, recording six points from blocks. 

 The Bulldogs controlled the third set from the start, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. Wingate would increase its lead to double digits before finishing off the third set and the match. 

 Coker hit .013 for the night, totaling 18 kills. Du Bray and Emily Everton led the team with five kills each, while Cerick finished with three, Chelsey Blume totaled two and Ashley Carson, Rami Mullen and Sierra Harvey each recorded one kill. Carson led the Cobras on the night with 10 assists, while Mullen recorded three, Cerick registered two and Everton also contributed one. Camryn Tate paced the Cobras with eight digs, while Everton recorded five and Mullen added four. Cerick and Carson each recorded three, while Blume posted two and du Bray contributed one. Coker posted 8.0 blocks for the night, with Harvey posting the lone solo block on the night. Blume led the effort with five block assists, while Cerick chipped in three and Everton and Harvey each had two. Du Bray and Payton Jackson also each registered one block assist on the night.  

 The Cobras (3-3, 1-2 SAC) are back in action on Friday (Sept. 20) traveling to Catawba for a South Atlantic Conference contest. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
