Bears hold off Wingate for third straight road win

Concordia goes 3-0 on spring trip, matches program high 3-game winning streak

WINGATE, N.C. - Concordia-St. Paul (3-1) scored 62 seconds into play and never looked back in edging Wingate University (1-4) by one goal, 10-9 on Saturday afternoon at Graham Gill Field. Concordia is off for two weeks, returning home to the Concordia Dome on Saturday, March 17 with a noon draw against Northern Michigan in the program's first-ever conference game as a member of the GLIAC.

Wingate never led or even tied the contest after Concordia opened the scoring as senior Kallie LaValle found sophomore Maddie Hentges for the first goal. The teams played scoreless for the next seven and a half minutes when sophomore Alina Boyce gave CSP a two goal advantage.

Hentges led Concordia with four goals while Boyce scored three. Hentges is now tied for the team lead with eight goals and has a team-high 13 points while Boyce is just behind with seven goals and is second on the team with 10 points. LaValle's assist on the first goal was her first of two on the day, and she's scored and assisted on four each for eight points on the year.

The Golden Bears were able to open up a pair of three goal leads in the game, when junior Sheala Osborne scored an unassisted goal in the 20th minute for a 4-1 lead and again in the 22nd minute of the second half when Osborne netted her second goal on a pass from sophomore Riley Burns for a 10-7 lead with just over eight minutes to go. It was the third assist of the game for Burns, who is tied with Hentges for the team lead on the year with five.

The first half was low scoring, with Concordia holding a 4-3 lead at the break in a defensive struggle before things opened up in the second half with each team scoring six.

Osborne's second goal of the game and third of the season proved to be the decisive score, as Wingate scored late in the 26th and late in the 27th minute to trim the margin to one with Concordia able to hold off the Bulldgos in the closing minutes including a free position shot with 1:04 to play that Joanna King missed high for Wingate with CSP responding with a successful clear to put the game away.

Osborne also had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Raelyn Korinek had a solid all-around effort with two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Freshman Lex Seifert scored her first career goal and added a ground ball, caused turnover and a pair of draw controls while freshman Lexi Stanley had three ground balls, a pair of caused turnovers and a draw control.

Sophomore goalie Katie Lottsfeldt had a season-high 10 save performance and also collected four ground balls for the Bears, improving to 1-1 in goalie decisions in the net on the year.

Wingate was led by Nina Cifolilli's four point day with two goals and two assists while Kendall Wells had a pair of goals and an assist. Arion Pierre made 15 saves in goal in the losing effort for the Bulldogs.
