Hales matches own single-game hit record in Softball’s split at E&H

Emory, Va. —- The Catawba College softball team split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Emory & Henry on Saturday, as senior Kary Hales matched her own single-game hit record with a 5-for-5 performance in game one.

 

GAME ONE | Catawba 9, Emory & Henry 5 

TEAM STATISTICS

- Catawba out-hit Emory & Henry 16-11

- The Catawba Indians recorded five of eight extra-base hits; the Wasps had all three homers

- E&H committed four of five errors

- Emory & Henry left 10 runners on base; Catawba stranded 13

- The Catawba Indians recorded the only stolen base of game one

- Catawba's pitchers allowed five runs on 11 hits and four walks, striking out two; E&H's staff allowed six earned runs on 16 hits and two walks, striking out five

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Hales was 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored

- Brianna Gallagher went 3-for-5 with a double and four runs scored

- Maddy Altiers added three hits, driving in two runs

- Rachel Pressly and Kenzie Church doubled

- Kate Holland earned the win in the circle in six innings of work; Brianna Herring recorded the final three outs in the seventh

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- Gallagher doubled with two outs in the first and was brought home by Hales' RBI single through the right side

 

THIRD INNING

- Hales added another two-out RBI single in the third

 

FIFTH INNING

- Church drove home a run on a double in the fifth to push the lead to 3-0

- Altiers added two more runs on a single

 

SIXTH INNING

- A two-out fielding error allowed another Catawba run to score in the sixth

- Herring drove home another run on a two-out RBI single in a pinch-hit opportunity

 

SEVENTH INNING

- Pressly pushed the Catawba lead to 9-0 in the top of the seventh to score Gallagher and Hales

- Three Wasp homers in the bottom of the seventh help bring E&H within four, but Herring closed the door, leaving the tying run on deck

 

GAME TWO | Emory & Henry 11, Catawba 1 - 5 innings

TEAM STATISTICS

- Emory & Henry out-hit Catawba 13-3

- The Wasps recorded seven of eight extra-base hits and three of four homers

- The Catawba Indians left three on base; E&H stranded seven

- Emory & Henry had two of three stolen bases

- The Wasps' starter allowed one run on three hits and two walks, striking out one; Catawba's staff allowed 11 runs on 13 hits and three walks

 

INDIVIDUAL LEADERS

- Gallagher homered

- Micaela Hartman provided three outs in the circle with no runs allowed

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FIRST INNING

- A sac fly and a two-out RBI single put the Wasps up 2-0 early

 

THIRD INNING

- An RBI double and three multi-run home runs allowed E&H to push their lead to 10-0

 

FOURTH INNING

- Gallagher's solo homer broke the shutout

- Emory & Henry answered with an RBI single in the bottom half

 

UP NEXT

- Catawba returns to action on the road in SAC play next week, heading to Mars Hill for a doubleheader on Wednesday
